How this is calculated

First, the FIRE number is annual_spending / (withdrawal_rate / 100), same as the retirement calculator. Then, working backward with monthly compounding over the months remaining until your target retirement age, the Coast FIRE number isFIRE_number / (1 + monthly_rate) ^ months_remaining. That is the balance that, with zero further contributions, grows on its own into your FIRE number by retirement. Your current savings are compared against that figure. The chart projects your current savings forward at the given rate with no further contributions.

FAQ

What is Coast FIRE?

Coast FIRE is the point at which you've saved enough that, left untouched to grow through compound interest alone (no further contributions), your investments will reach your full retirement (FIRE) number by your target retirement age. Past this point you could stop contributing to retirement savings entirely and still get there.

How is this different from the FIRE calculator?

The FIRE/retirement calculator on this site tells you how many years it takes to reach your number while contributing monthly. This one works backward from your target retirement age to answer a different question: what balance do I need right now, assuming zero future contributions, for growth alone to close the gap?

What happens if my current savings are below my Coast FIRE number?

It means you still need to keep contributing (or increase your expected return, or push back your retirement age) to reach your FIRE number on time. The gap shown is not a shortfall in your final retirement number. It's specifically the amount missing to "coast" the rest of the way on growth alone.
